Get Carried Away at Carillon

By Michelle Meagher March 20, 2008 Issue

If you’ve ventured to the west end of Panama City Beach, just east of where Walton County meets Bay County, you’ve probably noticed the newly built Carillon Beach Inn and the adjacent Sunrise/Sunset Condominiums. From the road you can’t miss the towering structures, with their impressive architecture and refreshing hues. On the other hand, you probably haven’t noticed the shops, restaurants, and businesses that form the heart of Carillon. Until you’re able to take a closer look, here’s a snapshot of all this community has to offer.

Carillon Beach was established in 1991 by the Biggs Family of Florence, AL. It’s a unique resort town, one that nurtures a casual and relaxed way of life. “We’re more quiet and peaceful than some of the other communities along 30-A,” says Fran Bright, a Sales Associate for Carillon Realty in downtown Carillon. “The kids own the streets here in the summertime.”

The 100 plus acre Gulf-front property boasts several amenities, including a 12 acre lake, naturally landscaped parks, three swimming pools, tennis courts, and of course an expansive beachfront. “We have close to 4000 linear feet of sugar-white sand,” adds Bright. Though the beautiful surround and the leisurely pace are obvious draws, there’s another side to this place that makes it even more appealing.

Downtown Carillon, with its brightly colored buildings and wrought-iron gas lamps, has an unmistakable New Orleans influence. Lloyd Vogt, a longtime resident of the Big Easy, is the town architect. “There’s an authentic feel to the main streets here,” says Bright. “Now that construction is complete on the Inn and the Condominiums, downtown Carillon is back and better than before.”

Graffiti, a family-friendly eatery, and the ever-popular Funky Blues Shack recently debuted on Carillon’s Market Street. Those familiar with the Destin and Baytowne Wharf locations will want to check out the fun and upbeat restaurant, with its artsy-craftsy décor, and the nearby watering hole, with its popular live music and jazzy atmosphere. Owner Chuck Stiles will also open The Dirty Dog Pizza Emporium later this month. The Leaping Frog Wine Bar, located in the lobby of the Carillon Beach Inn, offers 40 wines by the glass, along with select international beer.

Locals and visitors with a shopping itch to scratch can meander through Shipwreck LTD and Azul. Shipwreck LTD, a boutique and surf shop, carries everything from brand-name swimwear and footwear to designer sunglasses and beach-inspired jewelry. Just outside the store, bikes are available for rent. Across the way at Azul, customers can shop until they drop for coastal home décor. Hava Java, a café specializing in coffee and sandwiches, is nearby to supply a quick pick-me-up.

Attention, music lovers. Check out the Monday evening concerts performed on the Green. Young families are especially drawn to these events. The music genre varies; listeners enjoy anything from reggae to jazz and even bluegrass. Some of the bands featured this month include Conch Republic, Big Jim Brown, Jones & Company, and Waco Ramblers.

Couples who are recently engaged should consider the various ceremony and reception venues offered at Carillon. Brides-to-be will want to shop at the quaint and inviting Bella Bridesmaid, which is now open for business. Bella Flora, a full-service retail floral and gift shop is open as well. Such boutiques will facilitate the wedding planning process for those looking to tie the knot. For more information, visit www.carillonweddings.com.

If all of this sounds too good to be true, then you’ll have to visit Carillon Beach for yourself. In fact, while you’re there, inquire about vacation home and condominium rentals at the Carillon Beach Rental Office. Once you experience this all-inclusive community, you’ll want to return, whether it’s to the Inn, the Sunrise/Sunset Condominiums, or to a single-family home.

“The amenities at Carillon Beach really make a destination event possible,” says Bright. She adds, “You can come here, park, and never have to leave!”
